Those who care for a family member or friend facing disabling, chronic, acute or terminal health issues don't often get the acknowledgement they deserve.  In Canada, caregivers make a signficant contriubtion in the day-to-day deliver of health care. The numbers below are compelling:

  •  there are an estimated 4 million informal caregivers in Canada (Canadian Caregiver Coalition)
  • nearly 2.7 million are 45 years of age and older and provide approximately 80% of all home care to seniors and nearly 30% of services to seniors living in institutions (Statistics Canada, 2007)
  • from 2002-2007 those providing care to Canadian seniors increased by 670,000 (Statistics Canada, 2007)
  • approximately 43% of caregivers between 45-54 years of age have children at home (Statistics Canada, 2007)
  • it is estimated that the value of care provided by caregivers 45 to 64 years of age, and 65 years and older is an estimated 25 billion dollars annually (Hollander, Luis, Chappell)
  • one in six caregivers providing care to seniors experiences distress, according to a new study by the Canadian Institute for Health Information.
