Locating 'happy' in the caregiving picture

What makes you happy? If you’re muttering “happy shmappy, give me a break…” as you read this, then perhaps it’s time to give the matter some thought?

Personally, I don’t think it’s realistic to be happy all of the time, but that doesn’t negate the importance of pursuing a level of wellbeing and satisfaction in life - especially if you don't want to lose yourself in the process of caring for someone else. So when I recently came across the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire I decided to answer the 29 questions. It didn't take very long to complete and my final score proved to be quite accurate.

One of the suggestions for those who want to experience more happiness is to try keeping a gratitude journal. I’ve done this before and found it to be effective. But I didn’t actually write in a journal. I found it easier to think of three things that I was grateful for while trying to fall asleep at night. The process helped to wrap up any loose ends left lingering from the day’s events and allowed me to put a fresh foot forward the next day.

So - what are you grateful for?
