Mental illness in a family

Depression is something that I’ve been aware of since I was a child. My grandmother suffered from it for most of her adult life. We never really discussed it in our family, it was a given of sorts. We loved Grandma and we did our best to manage. It wasn’t until her 80s that she finally got some relief. I’m not sure what changed, but I suspect that she started taking one of the newer anti-depressants and the medication worked.

As a kid and a teenager, there were times when I felt confused and frustrated by her despair. I didn't know what to do to make it better. It would have been helpful to take part in a day like the one being organized by WOTCH Community Mental Health Services. The event entitled Care and Conquer is specifically for teens who have a family member or friend with mental illness. It takes place on July 29, 2010.

When one member of the family struggles with mental illness, other members of the unit often feel it too. Seeking understanding and getting support may make a big difference, especially on the really hard days.
