HEROES IN THE HOME: PORTRAIT OF CARE

Food, glorious food...

My elderly mother is an all-out foodie. She spends a great deal of her day thinking and talking about food. She knows all the latest cooking trends, the hottest chefs and she’s the reason why I enjoy a glass of Prosecco on a hot day. I hadn’t even heard of the dry sparkling Italian wine when it became all the rage a few years ago.

I’m grateful that for the most part, mom still has her appetite. On the days that she doesn’t she still pushes herself to eat well. And I rely on her interest in food as a means to gauge how well she's doing.

If your elderly parent or friend has lost interest in food, perhaps it’s time to consider a program like the “Out for Lunch Bunch" at Meals on Wheels London. Offered two to three times a month, the outings are for transportation clients at Meals on Wheels. The program started three years ago and Executive Director Laurel Vallance says it's been a great success. Volunteers pick up clients and take them to a pre-determined restaurant to enjoy lunch and companionship for a fee of $10. For more information call 519-660-1430.

The “Out for Lunch Bunch” is just one of an assortment of meal options offered in the South West region. This list from thehealthline.ca offers a comprehensive overview of other meal programs that may be a good fit for your care recipient. Oh and before I go, I just have to ask, what’s for dinner tonight?
