41 million unclaimed vacation days

I’ve never been one to NOT take vacations, but I’ve worked with enough people to know that these individuals really do exist. In 2008, 41 million vacation days went unclaimed by Canadians. Isn’t that awful! Some cited feelings of guilt about being away from work, while others said they didn’t take holidays because of poor planning on their part.  Whatever the case may be, it’s a shame.

Taking a vacation doesn’t necessarily mean travelling anywhere, it’s about taking a break from the daily grind, rejuvenating and gaining perspective. I think it’s imperative, if for no other reason, than to realize that you’re not irreplaceable - that the world will continue to function without you, like it or not.

Holidays can also present opportunities to make memories. If you’re thinking about travelling with your care recipient, planning ahead will be important. Not sure about all that may be involved? Consider reading “Incontinent on the Continent, My Mother, Her Walker and Our Grand Tour of Italy” by Hamilton author Jane Christmas. As one reviewer writes, "For anyone who has struggled with an elderly parent, this is a worthwhile read.”
