HEROES IN THE HOME: PORTRAIT OF CARE

Rapprochement and touring with mother-in-law

I’ve come across a couple of great articles this week while looking for news stories related to caregiving: This Mother’s Day, Send Mom a Dozen Roses -- and Your Caregiver Sister Two! and Driving Ms. Marjorie.

In the first piece, author Francine Russo writes about her troubled relationship with her sister, who was her mother’s primary caregiver. It includes a stat that I’ve never seen before: of the 43 million caregivers in the U.S., 85 per cent have siblings. This begs the question, why don't families Share The Care™? Russo offers a few good theories.

The second article was written in 2006, but the Globe and Mail decided to run it again with Mother’s Day quickly approaching. Peter Cheney writes about a family road trip with his 80-year-old mother-in-law. Oh yes, and one more detail, Grandma shared the back seat with his 14-year-old son Willie. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
