Signs you may be headed for a crash

At a recent cancer caregiver’s event, guest speaker Eunice Gorman asked participants: What’s the tip-off that you’re getting close to reaching critical mass? Do you have certain muscles in your back that start aching? Do you have less patience with others? Do you get more headaches?

It’s quite possible that as a caregiver, you haven’t had time to think about this. But taking a few minutes to look back for indicators that a crash was imminent may help stave off the next one. Self-awareness is key, but staying tuned-in to that awareness can be a challenge.

How about making one adjustment in your regular routine so that the prospect of change isn’t daunting? Check out these community services and supports to see what’s applicable to your situation. Consider calling on that friend who keeps offering to help you. Or maybe you’d like to talk to someone professional about how you’re coping? There’s no right or wrong here, it’s what works for you.  But first, as Gorman says, you need to “count yourself in.”
