Recording today for tomorrow

I’ve been meaning to record my mom’s stories about her childhood, the Second World War, how she came to Canada and other pivotal moments in her life. She’s quite game to sit down and chat - I just need to make it a priority. It would a shame, in this the digital age, to not record the family history for future generations.

In her recent entry, in the New York Times' New Old Age blog, Paula Span writes about how we’re quick to record the lives of children but we’re not as inclined to do so with aging family members. She makes some great points, and her piece also includes a video example of what’s possible with today’s technology. But don’t let that intimidate you. Most of today's cell phones also let you take pictures and record video. If you can make a phone call you can also do this. Just point and shoot, and think about how much it will mean to you to be able to look back when being together is no longer possible.
