Who is your unencumbered person?

You may have never heard of the unencumbered person, but it’s very likely that you have one in your family.

According to Eunice Gorman, nurse, social worker and assistant professor, every family has one. Gorman, who addressed cancer caregivers at an event in London this past weekend, described the unencumbered person as the one individual in the family who does nothing but is always ready to offer an opinion or tell you what you’re doing wrong. And you thought it was just your family!

What to do about the unencumbered person? Gorman’s overall message: tell them to push off if necessary. They don’t know the dynamics of what’s going on in your house and they have no right to judge you. And if that doesn’t work, Eunice says the next time they call and start launching into their all too familiar routine, hang up and tell them Eunice told you to do it. Can't you just see them standing there wondering, who is Eunice? She's a very wise woman, that's who.
