HEROES IN THE HOME: PORTRAIT OF CARE

I wish I could talk to someone...

When in the midst of a new and frightening experience, there’s nothing quite like having someone who understands just a phone call away.

While talking with local health care professionals recently about the needs of cancer caregivers, I learned of the One-to-One Peer Support program offered by the Canadian Cancer Society. It puts caregivers and patients in the throes of fighting cancer in touch with volunteers who have been through similar circumstances. Susan Cornish of the Canadian Cancer Society says that caregivers are often looking for a good listener, someone who will let them vent.

It’s really quite amazing when you think of it – a total stranger volunteers to listen to another stranger in their time of need. Likely a combination of the best of human nature and an appreciation for what it takes to fight cancer. That appreciation is captured in this video entitled “Fight” which recently took home a first place award at the 4th Annual DoGooder Non-Profit Video Awards. So…fight…fight hard…and know that you don’t have to do it alone.

One final note…there’s still space for cancer caregivers interested in attending a special workshop being held in London next Saturday. Click here for details.
