Grief knows no timeline

I've always been a big fan of Canadian journalist and activist June Callwood. Recently, I came across her daughter's account of her death and the year that followed.in "Her Great Art". Jill Frayne's story is one of twenty stories featured in the new book The Heart Does Break: Canadian Writers on Grief and Mourning.Frayne writes powerfully about losing her mother and the time it has taken for her to come to terms with her death.

That's the thing about grief - it knows no timeline. It refuses to accomodate our schedules or the expectations of others. It does eventually abate in its intensity and with some prodding it may even help us decide how we want to live.

Here in her final interview ever, June Callwood's thoughts on marriage, denial, "tender end-of-life moments", being taken care of and kindness. It's a rich eight minutes of perspective - but then again, it's June Callwood.
