HEROES IN THE HOME: PORTRAIT OF CARE

An unexpected turn during our Sunday drive

This past weekend brought something unexpected. While out on a Sunday drive with my mom and favourite fur ball, she asked me if we could drive by one of the city’s newest long-term care facilities: Glendale Crossing. I was a bit surprised. I really hadn’t expected to get that request, at least not yesterday.  Mom told me about a couple who had recently moved in and she wanted to see what it looked like.

As we drove by the new facility, she started telling me about different friends who had made the move to retirement facilities and how much they were enjoying their new surroundings, including the added support and the companionship of others. We didn’t spend a lot of time talking about what mom's next move might be, but she definitely opened the door to the discussion. I’m grateful that she's thinking ahead.

If you're caring for an elderly person still living on their own, and you think it may be time to start thinking about other options, these information sheets from the South West Community Care Access Centre may be of some help.

Wow! What an interesting drive. It sounds like you've got a great relationship with your mom - nice that she opened the door to talk. The fact that her friends provided the positive referral may suggest that the perception around retirement homes is changing - people are seeing them as part of a positive lifestyle change. There certainly are a lot of good choices out there for anyone thinking about making the move. In addition to the info sheets you mention, Thehealthline.ca has a great list of all the homes in the South West (http://www.thehealthline.ca/listServices.aspx?id=307 )

Thanks for your comment Jen!

You know, I was a bit taken aback, but then I thought it was really important to continue with the topic. I always feel better when I can talk about things and I want to do what I can to diminish any stress she may be feeling.

That must have been a bit of a surprise for you! How did you feel? I think it would bum me out, but it’s better than having it be the other way around – kids having to convince the parents to consider a move.

I like the personal sharing of your blog today. Very nice.
